Causes of Rosacea

Factors That Can Trigger or Worsen Rosacea

Factors That Can Trigger or Worsen Rosacea

  • Genetics: Rosacea tends to run in families, suggesting a genetic predisposition.
  • Immune System: An overactive immune system or an abnormal immune response may play a role.
  • Vascular Dysfunction: Problems with blood vessels, such as increased blood flow and vasodilation, contribute to redness and flushing.
  • Microscopic Skin Mites (Demodex): These mites are found on everyone's skin, but individuals with rosacea & acne may have a higher number triggering a response.
  • Other Factors: Possible causes include malfunction of a skin protein (cathelicidin) and certain infections like H. pylori.

Symptoms of Rosacea

Factors That Can Trigger or Worsen Rosacea

Symptoms of Rosacea

  • Facial Redness and Flushing: Often the earliest sign of rosacea; can be temporary or persistent.
  • Visible Blood Vessels: Small blood vessels, sometimes called spider veins, become visible on the face, typically on the cheeks and nose.
  • Bumps and Pimples: Red, solid bumps (papules) or pus-filled pimples (pustules) may appear, resembling acne but without blackheads.
  • Burning or Stinging Sensation: The skin may feel hot and tender, with possible burning, stinging, or tightness.
  • Skin Thickening: In some cases, the skin—especially on the nose—may thicken and enlarge, leading to rhinophyma, which is more common in men.
  • Dry Appearance: The skin may appear dry and rough.
  • Swelling (Edema): Facial swelling can occur alongside other rosacea symptoms.
